Cartwright Pickard Architects won Architect of the Year, the highest accolade in the 2014 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Yorkshire Region awards. This new award is given to an established practice in Yorkshire based on their track record and contribution to architecture in the region.
Cartwright Pickard also collected three RIBA Yorkshire Awards for their civic offices for local authorities at Doncaster Civic Office and Wakefield One, which also took home the Sustainability Prize. Both buildings are the result of the practice’s long-standing partnership with Muse Developments, developing an approach for a new breed of lean, responsible civic offices. The judges were impressed with the result of the rationalisation process of council premises which has already resulted in better services and facilities for customers, a reduction in unauthorised absence from staff and lower running costs.
The RIBA Yorkshire Award winners will also be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings later in the year.
Emma England, RIBA Regional Director said:
“We are delighted to give the inaugural RIBA Yorkshire Architect of the Year award to Cartwright Pickard. Both the Doncaster Civic Office and Wakefield One are evidence of their outstanding design skills, professional service offered to clients and the ability to deliver the brief in a creative and cost efficient manner. Cartwright Pickard have an impressive portfolio of work and their contribution raises the standard of architecture in the region.”
Peter Cartwright, Director of Cartwright Pickard says:
“The past five years have been an extremely testing time for architects working in the North of England and like many of the profession, we have had to make some tough decisions over this period. To win these awards for our designs and the practice is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, consultants and the support of our clients to realise these buildings. As a practice we have a clear philosophy; to produce beautiful buildings that use resources responsibly and we are delighted that our work, both on Wakefield One and Doncaster Civic Office and more generally, has been recognised by the RIBA.”
