Outwood Ghost, Wakefield, is a new low-rise eco-housing scheme commissioned by the Yorkshire Housing Association. It is a combination of conscious building ethic and efficient use of sustainable materials that the Code for Sustainable Homes awarded this development a rating of Level Four.
This residential project provides 24 new-build modern houses for rent, is designed to complement the existing urban surroundings, encouraging the brown-field site to thrive once again. The original entrance to the site is slightly re-defined and leads into an extension of the centre of the gently curving communal grounds. Crescents of housing built either side of the grounds reflect the street pattern familiar to the area, with the entrances to all houses positioned off this shared surface. Building on the theme of incorporation with the style of the existing neighbourhood each of the two storey high houses match the surroundings, employing a strategic roof design to restrict the overall height of the buildings and allowing solar thermal hot water panels to be integrated.
The materials of this new development further correspond to those of the existing housing are suitable for small-scale domestic buildings in this location.
