Cartwright Pickard Architects and developer Binks Vertical have collaborated on another conversion and extension of a landmark eighteenth century mill in West Yorkshire.
Ledgard Mill in Mirfield, which has now been completed and fully sold, provides 119 apartments in a five-storey mill building and a highly glazed contemporary extension – the Boat House. The scheme recently won the Transformation of the Year Award at the Residential Property Awards – the second time Cartwright Pickard and Binks Vertical have won this award.
The redevelopment is situated on the banks of the River Calder in a spectacular waterfront setting. A newly constructed central glass atrium in the original building floods the interior with natural light, and floor to ceiling glazing in the seven-storey extension maximises the panoramic views across the river and the surrounding landscape.
Built using modern construction techniques and materials, the Boat House was designed as an ‘extrusion’ of the mill, and provides a successful contrast between old and new. It accommodates a mix of one and two-bedroom duplex apartments which are a modern interpretation of the split-level mezzanine dwellings in the mill building.
Commenting on the scheme, Peter Cartwright, Director of Cartwright Pickard Architects, said, “Our aim with this project was to retain and restore as much of the original structure and character of the mill as possible – and to extend it in a way that is sympathetic in scale and form to the existing building. The end result has brought the site back to life, creating a vibrant new community and a range of spacious, modern homes in a fantastic location.”
The completion of Ledgard Mill follows the highly successful £17m Mill Royd Mill conversion project in Brighouse, also designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects and developed by Binks Vertical. The scheme became one of the fastest selling residential developments in the UK when 100 homes were sold in just four hours – and it also won the Transformation of the Year Award.
