The RIBA National Awards are given to buildings across the UK which are considered to be significant contributions to architecture. We are honoured to have Albert Works recognised with a RIBA National Award this year.
Albert Works creates a headquarter office that sympathetically builds on Sheffield’s industrial heritage. The project for local developer City Estates involved the conversion of four disused red-brick warehouses with the integration of a new central open plan infill to create approximately 1,600sqm of flexible workspace for brand and marketing agency, Jaywing.
The RIBA National judges comments included the following:
“This project brings back into use four virtually derelict warehouse buildings. Existing perimeter buildings have been carefully refurbished with a new courtyard infill, providing a double-height space and integrated core. New elements are crisp and modern insertions that create flexible workspace for Jaywing, a Sheffield-based creative marketing agency. The project ‘speaks’ Sheffield with confidence.
Cartwright Pickard has skilfully negotiated a clever design which seeks to balance the potentially conflicting demands of landlord and tenant. Using construction management procurement allowed the developer client and end-user to be jointly involved in key decision-making.
The space is wonderfully lit by north lights and provides a generous and calm working environment.”
