SIDNEY STREET GETS PLANNING GO AHEAD

Cartwright Pickard’s Sidney Street scheme for Elmsdale Estates has received planning permission from Sheffield City Council.

This mixed use scheme will provide office accommodation, commercial, retail and leisure space, 83 residential units consisting of 2bed, 1bed and studios, as well as the creation of a new public realm alongside Porter Brook.

Albert Works has already been pre-let in its entirety to marketing agency, Jaywing Plc. who will be moving from the outskirts of Sheffield into the city centre.

Located within the Cultural Industries Quarter conservation area of Sheffield, the development looks to retain as much of the existing industrial buildings of architectural merit as possible. Albert Works, Speedwell Works and 77 Sidney Street will be retained with the addition of new infill structures to develop a vibrant mixed-use scheme within a multi-courtyard urban block.

New buff and red brick elevations along with bronze aluminium cladding alongside the refurbished existing red brick buildings have been carefully selected to reflect and complement the industrial heritage of the site.

The development will start this exciting re-development of the neighbourhood with a proposed second phase on the opposite side of Sidney Street to complete this urban regeneration, creating a gateway into the Cultural Industries Quarter.

Dale Fixter, Director at Elmsdale Estates said: “It is great to see our long-term aspirations for the Sidney Street scheme finally being realised from the initial concept brief developed with Cartwright Pickard back in 2009. It’s a really exciting development which will bring life and activity back to the CIQ of Sheffield.”

Peter Cartwright, Cartwright Pickard Architects said: “Together with our client we have built on the success at Sellers Wheel and the Gatecrasher site to design these buildings. Working with existing buildings is challenging financially, but often creates new workspace and residential accommodation that is in much demand. The mix of old and new on the Sidney Street site will deliver another exciting building in the Cultural Industries Quarter we can all be proud of.”

Sidney Street will be Cartwright Pickard’s third major scheme in Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter for the client, following the 2012 award-winning Seller’s Wheel and the new Gatecrasher Apartments completing this month.
