Architectural design

The site is located within the Creative Industries Quarter of Sheffield, an increasingly vibrant area of the city, popular with students and close to our award-winning Sellers Wheel complex.

It was not possible to retain any of the original warehouse building structure, which was once home to Gatecrasher nightclub and was destroyed in a fire in 2007, but the ‘turntable’ landscaping to the courtyard gives a nod to the site’s past, providing social and historical interest.

The scheme adopts the courtyard model that is prevalent in the local Victorian warehouses. Commercial and retail units animate the street frontages along Eyre Lane, Matilda Street and Arundel Street and the development is topped with green roofs. As well as being sympathetic to the context, the courtyard plays a crucial role in the functioning of the proposal. It allows natural light to the inward facing rooms, is a valuable outdoor amenity space and provides a central access point to the student facilities and accommodation.
