Island, a next-generation workplace in Manchester, wins the Brick Awards in the Commercial Category.
Island has won the Brick Awards in the Commercial Category!
Located within the St Ann's conservation area in the heart of Manchester City Centre, Island is a new generation of workspace. While modern and contemporary in appearance, it has been designed to be sympathetic to its context, celebrating local heritage and craftsmanship.
Developed by HBD and the Greater Manchester Pension Fund, and delivered in collaboration with Bowmer + Kirkland, Island is net zero carbon, NABERS 5*, BREEAM Excellent, and WELL-enabled. It encourages a new hybrid model of working, where seamless technology combines with a design that enables people to work fluidly.
The façade, widely recognised for its exemplary use of off-site manufactured brick-clad precast panels, comprises 270 panels clad in over 270,000 Natural Orange handmade bricks supplied by Furness Brick & Tile Company Ltd. Techrete UK & Ireland manufactured and installed the panels, which were precision mortared and craned into place with windows already installed, a process that ensured exceptional quality and detailing while saving time on site. Curved brick corners and carefully coordinated window reveals respond to the surrounding historic context, creating a contemporary building that is firmly rooted in Manchester’s architectural heritage.
