Cartwright Pickard contributes to a major milestone at York Central with the design of Plot E to provide 129 new homes
The latest reserved matters planning application for York Central has been submitted, marking an important step in the delivery of one of the largest city centre regeneration projects in the UK. The £2 billion masterplan will create up to 2,500 homes and up to 1 million sq ft of commercial, retail and hospitality space. The project is expected to support 6,500 jobs and contribute £1.1 billion GVA to the local economy. With £135 million of Government funding secured for infrastructure, the scheme will establish a new city quarter next to York Station and the National Railway Museum.
Cartwright Pickard is designing Plot E as part of the first phase of development. Plot E delivers 129 homes across apartments and townhouses, with a range of one to four bedroom layouts. The design applies Passivhaus principles to reduce energy use and improve long-term performance, and consideration of modern methods of construction supports improved quality and reduced whole-life carbon. The neighbourhood is planned to promote health and well-being through inclusive layouts and alignment with WELL and Home Quality Mark criteria. Flexible Use Class E commercial space contributes to an active edge along Cinder Street and strengthens the public realm. Residents benefit from private outdoor spaces, including Juliette balconies, rooftop terraces and courtyard gardens, and the scheme has a direct relationship with the new Central Park. The material approach draws from York’s built heritage with robust and carefully detailed brickwork, creating a contemporary and durable character to York Central.
York Central is being brought forward by McLaren Property, Arlington Real Estate, Homes England and Network Rail with the support of the City of York Council and the National Railway Museum. Reflecting on the submission, Tom Gilman, Managing Director of McLaren Regeneration, said:
