3 Smithfield

The five-storey building sits at the heart of the Smithfield masterplan and fronts a new public square. Designed to maximise future flexibility and achieve BREEAM Excellent, it will have an expressed steel frame where each beam, junction and connection has been designed to be exposed and emphasise a ‘kit of parts’ approach. Sustainability was a key factor behind the choice of robust, long-life and low-carbon materials.

Inspired by Stoke’s heritage as the home of Wedgwood pottery and the inventor of the Spitfire, a colour palette was developed for the terracotta cladding which gives the building its strong context-led identity. The cladding’s scalloped texture is also reflective of Wedgwood style. This considered and crafted approach continues internally with a complementary palette of materials and colours which give the feel of a boutique hotel, rather than a corporate workplace.
